On the morning of August 14 in Hanoi, the Vietnam Journalists Association (VJA), in collaboration with the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), organized the WAN-IFRA Vietnam International Artificial Intelligence (AI) Forum 2026.
This is the first time the Forum has been held in Vietnam, marking a significant milestone in the digital transformation process of Vietnamese journalism, while affirming Vietnam's increasingly prominent position in the global innovation ecosystem.
The Forum brought together over 200 delegates, including leaders of state management agencies, heads of press organizations, researchers, reputable experts, and world-leading speakers on Artificial Intelligence (AI) from the US, Europe, ASEAN, and Vietnam.
The program included an opening session, thematic sessions, and a closing session, focusing on the most strategic and practical issues for journalism in the AI era.
Delivering the opening remarks, Mr. Le Quoc Minh - Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, and Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, highlighted the special significance of the WAN-IFRA 2026 Forum: "This is not just a place where we talk about technology, but a place where we together answer a crucial question: 'In the AI era, what do we want journalism to become?'"

"I believe the answer is not a form of journalism operated by machines. Instead, we are aiming for a journalism where humans effectively use technology to gain more capacity, to create greater value for the public. A journalist can use AI to research more deeply, analyze better, tell stories more creatively, and have more time to tell stories that are truly meaningful to society. A newsroom can use AI to operate more efficiently while still maintaining its identity and social responsibility. And journalism can leverage the power of technology while upholding its core values: truth, trust, and humanity."
Mr. Le Quoc Minh also affirmed that digital transformation is no longer an option but has become a development requirement for modern journalism. However, digital transformation is not just about introducing a few new tools into the newsroom. The ultimate goal of digital transformation must still be to improve the quality of journalism and better serve the public. In a world with too much information, journalism must be the place to seek the truth, verify the truth, and earn the public's trust.
"I believe that with the presence of managers, experts, leaders of press agencies, and numerous domestic and international colleagues, the WAN-IFRA 2026 Forum will open up new initiatives, new cooperation models, and practical solutions so that AI truly becomes a powerful tool for journalists and newsrooms, while contributing to strengthening public trust in journalism."
Opening the Forum, in the "Strategic Vision on AI" session, Mr. Le Quoc Minh also presented and provided a strategic perspective on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the journalism and media industry globally and in Vietnam.
Mr. Ezra Eeman - AI Expert, Director of Strategy and Innovation at NPO (Netherlands), moderated the first session.

Following that, Mr. Zhang Jun, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the South China Morning Post, shared practical experiences from his organization's AI-driven digital transformation process. One of the most anticipated contents was the session "AI Newsroom and Operational Processes in AI-Applied Newsrooms," with the participation of experts from The Straits Times (Singapore) and Fathm (Colombia). The discussion session shared how leading press agencies integrate AI into their operational workflows and AI-standard newsroom models.
From a governance perspective, the session "Governing Artificial Intelligence at Scale," with representatives from Hearst Newspapers (USA) and OK Lab (Switzerland), discussed building necessary governance frameworks to protect public trust, promote innovation, and maintain control over the future of AI in newsrooms.
The Forum also introduced typical practical models of Vietnamese journalism with AI application experiences from VnExpress electronic newspaper and Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV).
The session "The Future of Agentic AI," led by Mr. Derrick Ho from Hearst Newspapers (USA), introduced the latest trends in AI systems capable of automatically executing complex sequences of tasks, opening up entirely new operational methods for newsrooms in the future.
The Forum took place in the context of our country vigorously implementing Resolution 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthroughs in scientific and technological development and national digital transformation, along with the National Strategy on Digital Transformation for the 2026-2030 period, with a vision to 2045, aiming to elevate the country in the digital era.
The Vietnam Journalists Association hopes that through the forum, management leaders and experts will have the opportunity to share strategic visions, practical experiences, pioneering technologies, and models for applying artificial intelligence in journalism, thereby improving digital skills for Vietnamese journalists.
Vietnam hosting the WAN-IFRA 2026 International Artificial Intelligence Forum is a testament to Vietnam's determination to build a professional, humane, and modern journalism, taking technology as a driving force and people as the center of innovation. The Forum contributes to realizing the goal of digital transformation and enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese journalism in the new era.
