General Secretary, President To Lam and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese agreed to make science-technology, innovation, and digital transformation the new drivers of the bilateral relationship; expanding cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum technology.

On the morning of August 11 (local time), General Secretary, President To Lam held talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Australian Parliament House.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese affirmed that in an increasingly uncertain world, close cooperation between the two countries in various fields is of utmost importance.

Prime Minister Albanese shared his deep impressions of the country and people of Vietnam; highly appreciating the keynote speech delivered by General Secretary, President To Lam at the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore last May - which demonstrated Vietnam's vision for the region, emphasizing that peace and stability are shared values for all nations, including Australia and Vietnam.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the strong development momentum of the Vietnam – Australia relationship after more than half a century of diplomatic ties, characterized by solid political trust and increasingly consolidated mutual understanding and sharing.

General Secretary, President To Lam and the Australian Prime Minister exchanged views and reached a high consensus on major orientations to further develop the Vietnam – Australia relationship in depth in the coming time, meeting the development needs of each country as well as adapting to the shifts in the regional and international landscape.

The two sides agreed to consolidate the political foundation through strengthening high-level and all-level exchanges, deepening defense-security relations, including expanding into cybersecurity, combating transnational crime, and responding to non-traditional security challenges.

Regarding economic, trade, and investment cooperation, the two leaders emphasized the need to effectively exploit the complementarity of the two economies, leverage the free trade agreements to which both countries are parties, remove barriers, and create favorable conditions for businesses.

Making science-technology a new driver

Leaders of Vietnam and Australia agreed to aim for a bilateral trade turnover of 20 billion USD, while promoting supply chain linkages, high-quality investment, and cooperation in the fields of green economy, digital economy, new energy, and future industries.

General Secretary, President To Lam and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese shared the goal of making science-technology, innovation, and digital transformation the new drivers of the bilateral relationship; expanding cooperation in strategic fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum technology, biotechnology, biomedicine, marine research, critical minerals, and green hydrogen; promoting joint research projects, connecting universities, research institutes, and businesses, aiming to form a Vietnam – Australia technology connection space and develop high-quality human resources.

The two sides also agreed to promote cooperation in green and sustainable transition, climate change adaptation; fostering connections between universities, research institutes, educational and vocational training institutions, aiming to build programs for knowledge sharing, experience exchange, and cooperation in training high-quality human resources between the two countries.

General Secretary, President To Lam requested that Australia continue to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese students to study, work, and gain experience in Australia, encouraging the Vietnamese community in Australia to grow strong, remain united, promote the positive cultural values of both countries, and become an effective bridge for the friendship between the two nations.

Regarding regional and international issues, the two leaders agreed to strengthen coordination at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations, ASEAN, and ASEAN-led mechanisms; promoting dialogue, building trust, respecting international law and the United Nations Charter, ensuring security, safety, freedom of navigation and overflight, and resolving disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Vietnam affirmed its readiness to work with Australia to strengthen connectivity with Southeast Asia, uphold the central role of ASEAN, and contribute to a peaceful, stable, sustainable, and inclusive region.
