Switching a SIM card to an iPad, smartwatch, or 4G hotspot usually takes only a few minutes, but many people end up having their SIM locked because they overlook a step that few people pay attention to.

Since June 15, carriers have begun requiring users to perform biometric authentication when a SIM is detected in a new device to enhance subscriber security. If the verification is not completed within the specified time, the subscriber may face a one-way lock.

This regulation rarely causes issues when switching SIMs between smartphones. However, with iPads, smartwatches, or 4G hotspots, many users encounter difficulties because these devices do not fully meet the requirements for the carrier's verification process.

Each type of device faces different obstacles. 4G hotspots are not equipped with screens or cameras to perform facial authentication. Meanwhile, iPads may have limitations in receiving OTPs or navigating carrier apps, and some smartwatch models have small screens or cameras that do not meet the requirements for biometric authentication.

Nevertheless, by performing one simple action before removing the SIM from the phone, users can avoid the risk of their SIM being locked.

Before switching the SIM, users need to ensure their subscriber information has been standardized using their CCCD (Citizen Identity Card) or synchronized with VNeID. While the SIM is still in the phone, log in to the carrier's app, such as My Viettel, My VNPT, or My MobiFone, using an OTP. Only after a successful login should you remove the SIM and insert it into the new device.

Conversely, if the verification step required by the carrier is not completed, the subscriber may be locked according to regulations. Initially, the subscriber will be locked one-way and will be unable to make calls or send messages, but will still be able to receive incoming calls and messages.

If authentication is not completed after 60 days, the subscriber will be locked two-way. After another 5 days, the carrier may terminate the service contract and reclaim the phone number as per regulations.

In cases where users did not authenticate on their phone before switching the SIM, or if the subscriber has already been locked due to incomplete procedures, users can still perform authentication online.

Specifically, users can authenticate directly on the carrier's app or the VNeID app if they have an electronic identity account. After completing the information verification steps as instructed, the data will be synchronized with the carrier to process the request to unlock or maintain the service.

If online authentication is not possible, users need to bring their chip-based Citizen Identity Card or valid identification to a carrier's service point to receive assistance with verification and information updates.
